Bedtime Stories

Ryan purchased an infrared camera and set it up as a baby monitor. The video streams over our wireless and we can watch it on our computer. He installed it a few weeks ago, and I love having it. First, everybody enjoys staring at a sleeping baby, right? But even more importantly, I love having the camera because our bedroom door squeaks and our floor creaks. This way we can check on Asher without waking him up.

Also, the babe has started sitting and standing up when he should be sleeping. We think he “sleep sits” because he’ll be crying with his eyes closed, but sitting up, and when we lay him back down, he goes right back to sleep. Aww. Anyway, since we’ve been sleeping in the living room (sleep training; hopefully we’ll have drastically fewer night wakings in the near future), the camera helps us know when we can let him cry and when we need to rescue him.

Anyway, on to the pictures! We can take snapshots with the monitor camera. At first, they started out looking like this. So precious:

Then, sometimes we would put him down to bed, and thinking he was sleeping, we’d pull up the monitor feed and see this. Kind of startling! Ryan’s commentary: “He suspects something.”

The circle of little red lights on the camera is pretty fascinating. He stares at it a lot. The other day, when it was nap time, Asher repeatedly sat up every time I put him down. And every time I went from the room immediately to the computer, I would see something like this:

Then, after laying him down for a third time, this:

And then finally, this. Ryan’s commentary: “He’s on to us. Abort! Abort!”
We love our little boy.

Active Baby. Comatose Mom.

Today while Asher was playing by the living room steps, I was lying on the floor next to him. I was so tired, so I started to doze, opening my eyes every 30 seconds or so to check on him. Well, I fell asleep for probably a minute, and when I woke up, I could hear him but I couldn’t see him. Turns out, he had crawled UP the two steps in our living room. Seriously! He was barely crawling six inches last week. And yes, I fell asleep. Bad mom.

April 15, 2012

I guess it’s been almost two months since I’ve posted. But I feel like there’s not much to document around here. I’m hoping that if I just start typing, we’ll get something readable and hopeful interesting.

Ryan started a computer programming course this month. It’s a course offered at a university here in California that he is taking concurrently with students on campus, only Ryan watches the lecture online instead of in person.

He gets these challenging homework assignments that require him to make mini-programs. For some reason, he thinks that because I sometimes overhear parts of the lecture, and because I was a TA for an html/java/css class, that I have wisdom to offer. So when he comes across a kink in his program, he tries to talk it through with me. I pretend to have insightful conversations with him, but we both know it’s baloney. But whaddayaknow, sometimes it helps him because he got to talk it out. As for the TA thing, I still wonder how that gig landed in my lap. I still don’t know the difference between java and javascript. Back to Ryan: I think he’s really enjoying the class so far. I’m so proud of how hard he works and how he can think through the problems with his code until he gets it to work.

I am also proud of our BABY, who is such a big boy now. He’s been crawling all week, every day adding an extra few inches to his max distance. He still has a small radius, which has been nice for those of us who have to keep an eye on him. (Update: I wrote this five days ago…and he can go much further now!)

Crawling.

Strolling.

We’ve had some nice storms and windy weather lately. It’s made LA green and the air clean. It really is beautiful when you can actually see the downtown skyscrapers, the Hollywood sign, and the snowcapped mountains from a distance. Now is a good time to check out the Huntington Gardens. I want to do it within a month from now, so hold me up to it.

That’s it for now. Here’s to a better month of blogging.

Baby Update

Asher turned 6 months, and I feel like he has changed so much in the last couple weeks. He has two bottom teeth poking through. He loves babies and kids and makes a loud gasping noise when he’s happy.

He’s eating rice cereal now. At first he loved it and would lean forward to target the spoon with his mouth. He still likes it, but he tends to get bored and distracted. It’s probably time for new flavors!

We took him to Utah for the long weekend and he did so well. He loves his grandparents and aunts and uncles. While we were there, he was making lots of “m” sounds. Then, when we got home, it turned into “mammammamamma.” He was saying it as I was getting him ready for bed and while Ryan was reading him “Are You My Mother?” It was so sweet, and even if he doesn’t know what he’s saying, it makes me feel so good…though it wasn’t quite as heart-melting when he woke up and started saying it an hour after we went to bed.

Ryan has a work trip coming up. Since he’s going to be gone for 5 days, I decided that Asher and I are going to go see my family in Arizona. I’m looking forward to the trip, but at the same time we’re going to miss Ryan. A lot.

Three Things

First, this home is beautiful. It’s in Utah, near Park City, and HGTV is giving it away. I want it for a second home. A first home would also be nice, though not required.

Second, I am in serious need of some new fitness goals, goals that I can accomplish even when I don’t have time to strap Asher up in stroller for a jog. A few years ago, I did the one hundred pushups training program, and I’m starting it again. The premise is that you can work up to one hundred pushups over 6 weeks, no matter how weak you are when you start. That, along with “Baby & Me” yoga and a weekly jog at the beach, and I should be set.

Third, sleep training works! Asher has fallen asleep on his own 6 nights in a row, and the last two nights he didn’t cry at all. I kissed him good night, he rolled over, grabbed his stuffed giraffe and closed his eyes. PRECIOUS.

Cousins

Asher met his cousin Jordan over Thanksgiving. We are so excited for Cousin Number 2 to come (Ryan’s sister is pregnant and it’s also a boy).

And on another note, happy (upcoming) birthday, Dad. Grandpa-hood suits you well!

In What Life?

As time passes, and different phases of my life come and go, it’s really strange to think about past stages. Did they really happen? I know they did because I can remember them, but they feel more distant than real. Things like being 7 years old and going to elementary school and having recess, right? Well, I just realized the other night that my three months in Vienna, Austria, feel that way. I was there for a summer, studying abroad. I lived with an Austrian lady and took classes full time with Austrian professors, all in the native language. Can I even speak German anymore? I don’t know. That was a different life. Some day it would be fun to go back.

The reason I’ve been thinking about Vienna is that it’s December, and at Christmastime they have the coolest Christmas markets. Ever. (Or so I imagine). There are at least ten of them all around the city. They turn the city hall (see building below) into an Advent Calendar and open a different window every day. I mean, really. Coolest ever, right? They have baked goods, decorations, hot chocolate. And THEN…down the street there’s a Christmas village with tons of handmade stuff. Another one of the markets is at Schönbrunn palace (see building above). Uh-mazing! Now just imagine the pictures with snow and yourself trying to drink hot chocolate while wearing bulky mittens.

So I won’t get to experience a Weihnachtmarkt this year, but we DID get a real live Christmas tree this season, and our apartment smells incredible. Maybe Ryan could talk me into living in a forest (which he really has been trying to do). It would have to be a pine forest though.

p.s. In a survey of 221 international cities, Vienna was voted 2011′s most livable. In response, the city is offering a drawing to win a trip for two. I entered, of course. If I talked you into wanting to visit, you should enter. The drawing closes in a couple of days.

And, finally, the obligatory Asher picture:

A Day in the Life

**WARNING** This blog is about to turn into a photo dump of Asher pics, and it’s likely that his grandmas are the only ones who will get through. So, if you don’t want or need to see our baby from every angle, it’s okay. I understand if you stop reading now. I, for one, will probably keep coming back to look at the pictures. Cause for some reason it’s fun to look at them even when I’ve got the real thing around. Also, a second disclaimer: These pictures aren’t all from the same day, but a lot of them are!

Making faces in the bouncy chair he’s borrowing from his cousin Emmett…

Getting tired of the bouncy chair…

Graciously letting  Mom take lots of pictures of him. Then giving me cuddles afterward…

Taking a nap. Please note: He is in his crib. Success! Also note: It takes a lot of props to get him comfortable…

Hanging out by the fireplace roasting marshmallows. (Reminiscent of my first post. Not the very first post. That one was Ryan, but you figured that already, didn’t you?) …

Getting ready to go on a walk with Dad and BabyBjorn…

Pooped after the walk…

The next three photos are a tribute to the twenty minutes I spend every two and a half hours of the day. This pretty much sums the montage up: Hungry baby. Eating baby. Satisfied baby.

I’m sorry about the eating one. I had to throw it in there. But by now it’s only the grandmas reading anyway, right?

Playtime (aka letting Mom take even more pictures). See how he’s starting to grab things now? …

The best part of the day, though, is when Dad comes home for lunch. Asher really likes that…

Ooh-ing and Ah-ing

We’re starting to have conversations with Asher. Real back-and-forth exchanges. They go like this:

Me          Ma ma ma
Asher:   [smile]
Me:         Da da da
Asher:   Unga.
Me:         Unga?
Asher:   [smile]. Wuh?
Me:         Wuh.

Here’s the translation:

Me:         Say ma-ma!
Asher:   I’m super cute, mom.
Me:         Say da-da!
Asher:   Let’s just play.
Me:         How about sleep?
Asher:   No, I’m too busy being cute.
Me:         Bummer…

Here’s a video of Asher cooing.

**Update** My baby is not racist. I changed his babblings to be more phonetic and less…derogatory.

A Name and a Blessing

We went up to Utah to visit Ryan’s parents and to give Asher a name and a blessing. It’s been almost three weeks and I feel like these pictures are already outdated (baby boys grow fast), but I still need to put them up.

It snowed in Utah, but Asher stayed nice and warm.

He was so happy to meet Grandma (and Orlando).

He was charmed by Grandpa too.

But mostly, he did a lot of sleeping.

And still sleeping…

Here we are with both grandparents.

The trip was a success. I think he’ll want to go back again soon!
